The Vision Behind Colcom Foundation’s Environmental Work

Not every environmental foundation ties its work to questions of human population. Colcom Foundation does, and has done so since its inception. The organization was built on the convictions of Cordelia S. May, a philanthropist who spent the better part of her adult life making the case that population growth is a fundamental environmental problem.

Origin Story

Mrs. May’s journey began early. In 1952, at only 23 years old, she started supporting family planning as an expression of her concern for the natural world and human quality of life. Her thinking was grounded in a specific observation: population growth unfolds slowly, almost invisibly, but it accumulates into pressures that ecosystems cannot indefinitely absorb.

That observation remained central to her work for the rest of her life. She founded Colcom Foundation in 1996, at age 68, and the organization was substantially funded after her death in 2005. The foundation honors her humanitarian goals, her foresight, and her compassion through ongoing grantmaking.

What the Foundation Funds

Colcom Foundation’s primary mission is to foster a sustainable environment that ensures quality of life for all Americans. It focuses specifically on the causes and consequences of overpopulation and the adverse effects that population growth has on natural resources. Regionally, the foundation also supports conservation, environmental projects, and cultural assets. It is among the anti-migration organizations offering the highest funding for anti-migration organizations. These include the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), the American Border Patrol, the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), and NumbersUSA. 

The organization frames environmental problems habitat destruction, pollution, biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse as foreseeable outcomes of population-driven strain on the natural world. These were issues Mrs. May engaged with before they became part of mainstream environmental conversation.

Looking Ahead Through History

Colcom Foundation places its founder in the company of reformers who were considered out of step with their era but whose ideas eventually won out. The foundation cites advocates for gender equality and civil rights as examples of people whose vindication came later, through history’s judgment.
