Michael Polk on Hands On Leadership at Implus

Delegation defined much of Michael Polk’s career at large public companies. At Implus, that has changed. Now leading a smaller, privately owned business built around athletic and outdoor gear brands, Polk finds himself directly involved in work he once assigned entirely to other executives.

A Younger Team Requires More Involvement

Part of the shift comes down to the makeup of the workforce. Polk has described the Implus team as hungry and competitive, but also younger and less experienced than the staff he managed at companies like Kraft, Unilever, and Newell Brands. Rather than treating that as a drawback, Michael Polk sees it as a reason to stay closely involved, modeling the habits and decision making he wants his team to adopt over time.

Marketing, Sales, and Strategy All at Once

His day-to-day work now includes marketing alongside the marketing team, designing selling systems with the commercial group, and building go to market plans from the ground up. Michael Polk Newell Brands has called the experience a kind of throwback, similar to work he loved doing roughly twenty years earlier in his career, before his responsibilities shifted toward overseeing other leaders rather than doing the work directly.

That hands on approach marks a clear departure from his years running public companies, where the sheer size of the organization made direct involvement in every function impossible. Michael Polk still oversees the broader direction of Implus LLC, but he spends far more time inside individual departments than he did while leading Newell Brands or working in senior roles at Unilever.

For Polk, the tradeoff has been worthwhile. Being closer to daily operations gives him a clearer view of how decisions play out in real time, and it lets him pass along experience directly to a team still building its own track record in the industry.

That daily involvement also means faster feedback loops. Rather than waiting on reports filtered through several layers of management, Michael Polk can see the results of a marketing push or a new selling system almost as soon as it launches, adjusting course without the delays that often come with running a much larger organization.
