Dr. Andrew Jacono’s Work Restoring Domestic Violence Survivors
Facial injuries from abuse rarely heal on their own terms. They linger as a visible reminder of what happened, complicate job interviews, and often stand in the way of a survivor’s ability to move forward. For more than 100 domestic violence survivors, that reminder has been addressed in the operating room of Dr. Andrew Jacono, a dual board-certified facial plastic surgeon who serves as senior advisor to the FACE TO FACE project.
Pro Bono Care With Lasting Effect
The FACE TO FACE project, run through the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, connects survivors with surgeons willing to donate their time and technical skill. Dr. Andrew Jacono has used that platform to perform facial reconstructions at no cost to patients whose injuries came from partners or family members rather than accidents. Each case calls for the same precision he applies to his Park Avenue cosmetic clients, but the goal differs. Instead of enhancement, the aim is restoration, giving a survivor back a face that does not announce her history to every stranger she meets.
Recognition for a Decade of Advocacy
This work has not gone unnoticed. The Center for the Women of New York honored Dr. Jacono in 2006 with a Good Guy Award for his advocacy and pro bono contributions, and U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy commended him in the Congressional Record for his contributions to women’s welfare through surgery and charity. For nine years he also chaired ABOUT FACE: MAKING CHANGES, an annual benefit supporting survivors of domestic violence, extending his involvement well past the operating table.
His efforts later reached a national television audience through the 2011 series Facing Trauma, which followed him performing reconstructive procedures for victims of abuse and other traumatic injuries. Viewers saw the surgical complexity alongside the emotional weight carried by patients reclaiming their identities. His record with FACE TO FACE reflects a belief that facial plastic surgery carries an obligation reaching past paying clients, one measured in more than a hundred rebuilt lives.
