Dr. Andrew Jacono Traces Career to a School Bus

A lonely school bus ride decades ago quietly shaped one of New York’s most recognized facial plastic surgeons. As a young medical student, Dr. Andrew Jacono watched a girl who had been mocked for a cleft lip and palate return to class after reconstructive surgery. Her classmates treated her differently. Her posture changed. That shift stayed with him.

Today, Dr. Andrew Jacono runs a dual board-certified facial plastic surgery practice on Park Avenue, treating patients who can afford the most advanced cosmetic procedures available. But the observation from his training years never left him, and it pushed him toward a parallel career spent restoring faces for people who could never pay for the surgery themselves.

Two Paths of Service

That early memory grew into two distinct humanitarian commitments. Domestically, he has reconstructed the faces of more than 100 survivors of domestic violence through the FACE TO FACE project, a program run by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, where he serves as senior advisor. His work with survivors was documented in the television series Facing Trauma, which aired on Discovery Fit & Health and later the Oprah Winfrey Network.

Internationally, Dr. Andrew Jacono has treated more than 750 children born with cleft lips, cleft palates, microtia, facial tumors, and burn scars, traveling to Colombia, Ecuador, Thailand, and Vietnam through groups including Healing the Children and the HUGS Foundation.

A Practice Built on Obligation

Recognition has followed, including a 2006 Good Guy Award from the Center for the Women of New York and a formal commendation in the Congressional Record from U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy. He has also climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Elbrus to raise money for these causes.

As Fellowship Director for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Jacono now passes that same sense of obligation to the surgeons training under him, teaching technique alongside a philosophy that specialized skill carries a duty to those who cannot pay for it.
